CatholicFIT Curriculum | Module 7

This week’s principle is LEARNING & SHARING. I am what I hear and watch. Our eyes and ears are the windows to our heart and soul.

Proverbs 4:23: “above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

In the Gospel, Jesus teaches us to keep our eyes and body healthy:

The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be filled with light. Take care, then, that your light not become darkness.” – Luke 11:34-35

Ian Zimmerman, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and a researcher on this topic has written,

“We are what we consume. We consume to construct and maintain our identities, and at the same time the things we consume influence our conceptions of ourselves. Our identities and our perception of others are strongly influenced by what we consume in the media and elsewhere.”

Hoping to use the Holy Spirit’s fruit of SELF CONTROL, as discussed last week, we must continually be vigilant about what we and our students consume, and the impact it has on our emotional, spiritual, and physical health.

Activity Review & Learning Objectives

After this week, students should be able to:

  • perform a well-balanced genuflect, and understand when to genuflect at Mass, in Church and/or in front of the altar
  • perform or understand the different types of lunges: forward stationary, reverse stationary, walking and side lunges
  • discuss times they may struggle with consuming media that may not help them become the best version of themselves
  • discuss examples of media (books, videos, music, TV, movies) that are healthy and appropriate for them
  • discuss the importance of FAMILY & COMMUNITY when it comes to supporting others in making healthy decisions about what sort of media they consume

Reflection Questions

  • What types of music, books, and movies will help you get stronger in mind, body and spirit?
  • How can you use social media and internet videos to become a smarter, healthier person?
  • What are the consequences of hearing and spreading gossip about other students and people?
  • Why is it important, as we learn in Proverbs, to “guard our heart, for everything you do flows from it?”

Coming Next Week ...

Next week we wrap things up with PRAYER & REFLECTION – the final principle and the one that encompasses all others. Just as the earlier principles of water, sleep, and food are foundational to our physical health, our prayer life is foundational and fundamental to our spiritual life. We will discuss prayer, reflection, silence, and combine all of the exercises together into circuits, combo moves, burpees, sports skills and more!
